In order to meet the literacy standards in all content areas, ALL teachers are expected to teach reading and writing strategies. But how can that be done while still covering content information?
Teaching text structure strategies help students learn to read and comprehend challenging content specific texts. Text structure strategies help students write and organize content specific written responses.
Research shows that when students are explicitly taught to identify text structures while they read, they understand the material better, retain more information, and model the structure in their own writings (National Institute for Literacy, 2007).
