The Illinois State Historical Society is offering the $1,000 Verna Ross Orndorff Scholarship award for the best 1,500-word essay written by an Illinois high school student. The subject matter of the essay is either Abraham Lincoln or the Civil War Era in Illinois. Essays must be submitted by January 15, 2019. Hall High School's 21st Century Community Learning Center has a club called "Kickin' It with the Counselors". In this club, students begin college prep by working on applications, FAFSA, partaking in college visits, and prepping for the SAT.
Students are doing virtual tours of two colleges (pictured): Augustana and ISU. The intention of this lesson was to not only show two different colleges, but to also allow them to compare a private and a public school.

Nine of our 21st CCLC sites celebrated "Lights on Afterschool" last week! The schools pictured include Allen Junior High in La Moille, Cambridge Elementary and Jr./Sr. High, Colona Grade School, Galva Elementary, Hall High School, Irving Grade School, La Moille High School, and Van Orin Grade School in Van Orin.
According to the AfterSchool Alliance website, 11.3 million students are left without adult supervision after school. "Lights On Afterschool" is a project of the Afterschool Alliance. Our 21st CCLC sites that participated were part of more than 8,000 rallies and events across the United States bringing attention to the need to keep kids safe after school hours.
