Genius hour is an instructional strategy that allows students to be creative and explore topics of their choice is a guided learning environment. Genius hour allows student choice in what they learn during a set period of time within a classroom environment.
The idea of Genius hour grew out of a practice used by Google. “Google, allows its engineers to spend 20% of their time to work on any pet project that they want. The idea behind this is very simple. Allow people to work on something that interest them, and productivity will go up. Google’s policy has worked so well that it has been said that 50% of Google’s projects have been created during this creative time period.” (Chris Kesler, Genius Hour)
Come spend an evening learning about this instructional strategy. Participants will leave with an understanding of the Genius Hour practice and classroom resources that can help teachers put it into practice within his/her classroom.
