“For many students, revisions are done in order to fix something. And if something needs fixing, it has to be wrong in the first place. And students don’t like to be wrong!”- -Michael, The Thinker Builder
Revising is more than “fixing” something. Revising is making decisions about changes, adding and eliminating, rearranging, and experimenting. If we want students to revise their writing work, we need to change the writing culture in our classrooms. We need to teach students that one way they can become better writers is to revise their own writings. This workshop will focus on creating a culture where revising is a “understandable and necessary” part of the writing process for all students. Strategies to teach revising in a new and effective way will be introduced.
